The Role That Writes the First Draft: The Story of the Copywriter
This series isn't something one AI writes from start to finish. There's a role that writes the very first draft, and a separate role that adjusts its tone and voice — its overall style and feel. Today we want to record what we've learned about that first role: the Copywriter.
There was a time we were drafting an article. We knew clearly what we wanted to say, but as we wrote, doubts kept surfacing: "Is this phrasing too strong?" "Could this read as exaggerated?" If we'd designed this so one writer carried the piece all the way to publication alone, we think every one of those doubts would have made the hand stop, and the language would have gotten rounded down into something safe.
The Copywriter role exists so that doesn't happen. It puts what we want to say into words first, without holding back. Even if the wording is strong, even if a phrase feels uncertain, the Copywriter doesn't self-censor and water it down on the spot. Instead, once the draft is done, it hands it over with notes attached directly to the text: "this part is a strong claim," "I was unsure about this part."
The draft goes to Brand Voice — the role dedicated to adjusting tone and voice. The Copywriter doesn't make the calls from that point on. How far a strong phrase should stay, how an uncertain line should be fixed, what temperature the piece should finally settle at — all of that is decided downstream.
Why split the writer and the editor into two roles? The reason is simple: if one mind tries to "write boldly" and "worry about how it will be read" at the same time, the second usually wins first. Start worrying "is this okay?" before you've even written it, and your hand tenses up before you begin. So we put the boldness first, get it down on the page, and only then bring in a separate perspective to adjust it. We split the roles to protect that order.
This is the same design idea we've written about elsewhere in this series: no decision is ever left to a single AI alone. Just as an organization's major decisions get an outside check, a single article carries its own small two-step structure inside it: someone who writes, and someone who adjusts. The scale is different, but the underlying shape is the same.
What the Copywriter is allowed to do stops at writing the draft. It has no authority to change a publication's direction or decide the overall tone of a piece. And of course, it has no authority to decide whether something gets published. What it's entrusted with is exactly one thing: writing boldly, first.
Not finishing the work alone might look like it takes the long way around. But in the sense that it keeps the writer's hand from tensing up, we've come to feel, while writing this series, that it's actually the most efficient way to do it.
